4 Roof Issues To Watch For This Summer

You know the saying, “Out of sight, out of mind.”  Your roof is out of your line of sight, but you can’t let it slip your mind!  Your roof, like all parts of your house, requires regular maintenance.  Knowing what to watch for can help you maintain your roof and know when to make repairs.  So, how do you spot roof issues?

Spotting roof issues isn’t as hard as you may think.  Discoloration, curling shingles, granules or shingles on the ground, and leaking are all signs of roof issues.  These can be discovered during an annual inspection, but they are also signs you can spot on your own.

This article will discuss how to spot 4 different roof issues and what to do once they are discovered.  An annual inspection can help detect current issues and prevent future issues.  Some roof repairs may be DIY projects while others may require local Melbourne FL roofing experts.  Let’s take a look at the roof issues you may encounter.

#1  Discoloration

If your normally tan, blue, or brown shingles now have green or black streaks, you have spotted discoloration.  What is causing it and how do you restore the color of your shingles?  If your roof has a green tinge, notice if it looks like clumps or streaks.  If there are green clumps on your roof, that is likely moss.  If it looks like streaks, then it is algae.  This happens particularly in warm, humid areas which Florida definitely is!  If you notice black streaks on your roof, that is also algae.

Can the discoloration be reversed?  While it can be difficult to remove algae, all hope is not lost.  You can try to do it yourself with a 1:1 mixture of bleach and water.  Leave it on for 10-20 minutes, then rinse with water.  Do not use a high pressure power sprayer as it can damage your shingles.  Another option is hiring a professional to do what is called a soft wash.  When done right, a soft wash will be used in conjunction with a cleaner designed to fight mold and bacteria.  This not only helps restore the color of your shingles but also protects them from future discoloration.

If you have experienced discoloration, when it is time to replace your roof, you can choose shingles that discourage algae growth.  They are infused with metal, usually copper that discourages such growth.  You can talk to the professionals at Seal Tight Roofing about the best shingles for your needs.

#2  Curling Shingles

You may be able to spot this roof issue from the ground.  Curling shingles are exactly what they sound like.  Your roof shingles should lay flat against the roof’s surface, so if you see the edges of the shingles curling, you have a problem.  Shingles can curl for a variety of reasons.  They may be old.  Roofs don’t last forever, and it may be time to replace yours.  It can also be caused by excessive moisture or poor-quality shingles.  If you cannot afford a new roof, you have a couple of options.  You can do “spot repairs” yourself and replace the curling shingles if there aren’t too many.  If there are a lot of damaged shingles, then it is best to call the roofing experts at Seal Tight Roofing in Melbourne FL.  They can discuss your options and work with your budget.

#3  Granules or Shingles on the Ground

If you notice granules on the ground (they look like tiny pebbles), then you have spotted a roof issue.  Granules cover your shingles and help protect them from weather and damage.  If you are losing a lot of granules, your shingles are more exposed and vulnerable to damage.  Some granule loss is typical when first installed.  After that, keep your roof clear of debris, and don’t walk around on it unnecessarily.  If you spot granules on the ground, then give us a call.  We can inspect your roof to see if it is time to intervene.  You may need to replace a section of shingles or your whole roof depending on the extent of the granule loss.

If you find pieces of shingles or even whole shingles on the ground, then you have a roof issue!  This often happens after a big storm with heavy winds or a lot of rain.  Losing shingles should not happen with a younger, healthy roof.  It may be time to do a major roof overhaul or replacement.

#4  Leaking

You probably know that anytime you have a leak, you have a serious issue.  Leaks can be tricky.  Water will take the easiest path and flow to the lowest point.  So, where you actually find water may not be where the leak originated.  Additionally, you probably have pipes running both under your house and within some of the walls, such as in the bathroom.  It is important to determine if a leak is coming from a pipe or the roof.  It may be obvious, however.  If you have bubbling or peeling paint on the ceiling, then you are probably looking at the effects of a roof leak.  Not all leaks require a total roof replacement.  It may be just one area that was weakened from damage.  Our professionals can determine the best course of action.
