The Impact of Overhanging Trees on Your Roof

The Impact of Overhanging Trees on Your Roof

As you look out the window at the beautiful old oak tree next door, you are probably not thinking about one of its giant branches making its way through your roof.  Trees are just one natural element that can affect your roof and the maintenance it requires.  You never hear people say, “I hate trees.”  Why would they?  They provide shade, beauty, and often delicious fruit.  You also don’t hear people say, “I hope a tree damages my roof.”  However, without addressing overhanging tree branches, you might as well be saying that!

Seal Tight Roofing Experts understands the dangers of overhanging branches, and we want to share that information with you.  This article is going to look at the physical damage that can be caused by overhanging branches.  We will discuss clogged gutters and drainage issues, pest infestation, and moisture issues.  Lastly, we will discuss preventative measures. So, let’s talk trees!

Physical Damage from Overhanging Branches

A branch doesn’t have to fall to cause damage.  If you have low-hanging or broken branches scraping against your roof, they are probably damaging your shingles.  Shingles are covered with granules designed to protect your roof from sun and weather damage.  If these granules are knocked off the shingles by branches, the shingles can become compromised which makes your roof vulnerable to damage.

With hurricane season just two months away, the risk of branches falling from high winds during storms is a very real danger.  Not only can this severely damage your roof, but large branches can also damage your house structure.  They can endanger those inside the house, as well.  Although the branch may not fall into the house, the branch hitting the roof can cause falling debris, such as drywall, which can harm your family.

Clogging Gutters and Drainage Issues

If you live near any oak trees, then you know that they produce thousands of small leaves.  They look beautiful on the tree.  They look awful in your house gutters.  If you have a waterfall flowing from any of your gutters, then you probably have a clog.  Accumulated leaves are excellent at clogging gutters.  While clogged gutters might not seem like a big deal, they can cause damage to your roof.

Drainage issues from leaf buildup can cause serious issues for your roof.  The wet conditions provide a great environment for moss and algae growth.  While small insects and rodents may enjoy the moss and algae, your roof won’t.  It can spread from your gutters to your roof.  Moss and algae on the roof create a damp environment that damages shingles.  As shingles lift and curl, water can get beneath them causing roof damage and leaks.  Keeping gutters clear of leaves from overhanging branches and nearby trees is a must.

Pest Infestation

Tree branches hanging over your roof can be a highway system for critters.  Insects, squirrels, raccoons, and possums can all gain access to your roof through overhanging branches.  You never want critters on your roof.  They are little damage machines.  They can chew on shingles, use your roof as a private bathroom, and possibly find a way into your attic which presents a whole new set of problems.  Not only can you end up with roof damage, but you may sustain water damage and also have a pest infestation which requires a professional exterminator.

Roof Moisture Issues

We have already touched on this briefly, but let’s look a bit more in-depth at roof moisture issues.  Overhanging branches result in shady areas on your roof.  While relaxing in the yard with a book and an iced tea, the shade is awesome.  Shady spots on your roof are not.  Without proper sun exposure, roofs do not have adequate heat to dry after rain, and we get a lot of rain in central Florida.  As mentioned above, moisture on your roof can cause a myriad of issues, such as damaged shingles which lead to further roof damage and possible leaks which can cause structural damage.

Mold and mildew are a natural part of our environment, but if they make their way onto your roof, they may find a way into your house.  On the exterior, they can cause roof damage.  On the interior, they can cause health issues.  It is essential that your roof does not retain moisture allowing a home for mold and mildew.

Take Preventative Measures

One of the best things you can do for your roof is to remove overhanging branches before they cause damage.  Remember, even their shade can cause issues, so don’t procrastinate.  Maybe the overhanging branches are from a neighbor’s yard and you are worried about making them mad by trimming their tree.  Under Florida law, if branches are crossing your property line, you have the legal right to trim them back to the property line.

Additionally, clean your gutters regularly removing all leaves and other debris.  You can hire someone to clean them if you are not physically able, don’t have the time, or simply don’t want to do that particular chore.  You can also have leaf guards installed on your gutters to help keep leaves out.  These are a great idea to help keep your gutters free from leaves and protect your roof from the dangers of clogged gutters.

Lastly, having an annual inspection by Seal Tight Roofing Experts can help you stay on top of roofing issues.  We can then make any necessary repairs before they become a major problem.  This is a great way to maintain your roof.
